MWI on Musicals: 37% still can’t get enough of Grease

While this year’s Tony Awards have come and gone (major props to our boy Frank Under- ummm, we mean Kevin Spacey) we’ve still got stars in our eyes. We mean, there’s music, and then there are musicals. They might be corny sometimes, sure. Maybe a tad unrealistic in portrayal. But even still, they are always infused with a little bit of magic, and for that we’ll always love them.

With your help, we dove into the world of Broadway, Disney, and musical films, too! Here’s what we found.

We answered the age old question — musicals or plays? Surprisingly, the disparities weren’t as divisive as we thought they’d be. While 43% of you preferred to watch a play, 57% preferred a musical.

Which musicals? Here are the top five you guys grew up listening to:

  • Grease (33%)
  • The Sound of Music (16%)
  • The Phantom of the Opera (16%)
  • Fiddler on the Roof (7%)
  • My Fair Lady (6%)

Of course, one of the most fun (and accessible!) ways to see musicals is to kick back and watch their movie versions. Since the 1950’s, dozens of stage-to-film adaptations have been imagined by talented casts and crews. You guys liked Danny Zuko’s best.

And let’s not forget the pure joy that is Broadway + Disney! We are not worthy! Here’s which Disney film you think turned into the best musical:

  • The Lion King (35%)
    Beauty and the Beast (34%)
  • Aladdin (11%)
  • The Little Mermaid (10%)
  • Mary Poppins (9%)

There you have it! The reveals from all you musical theatre nerds at heart. Did we skip over any musical that you love? Is there anything currently playing that you’re looking forward to seeing? Let us know in the comments below.

There are so many that didn’t make the list that I absolutely adore. Oklahoma, Carousel, West Side Story and you can’t forget Les Miserable. My all time favorite Disney musical would be Cinderella. I haven’t seen a good Musical since A Chorus Line.

I don’t usually watch musicals or plays. I have seen the ones that were made into movies or vice versa. The only musical movie I can tolerate is Grease or Hairspray.
